Cabo Delgado is the northernmost province of Mozambique with a population of 2,320,261 (2017). Mozambique is a country with a Christian majority, however two northern provinces have a Muslim majority: Niassa (61%) and Cabo Delgado (54%). Since 2017, unfortunately a group of Islamic terrorists has begun to attack defenseless people and, with the excuse of religion, aims to control a territory very rich in raw materials. As if that weren’t enough, the north of the country is hit by cyclones every year and in 2021, 560,000 people were displaced, especially women and children. The Augustinian Sisters “Hermanas Agustinas Hijas del Santísimo Salvador en Mozambique” have been working in Mozambique for many years to help the poorest and, among them, the displaced. Host communities are highly vulnerable and at high risk of food insecurity. In addition to emergency interventions developed starting from 2021, the Foundation together with the Augustinian missionaries is promoting a development path in the agri-food sector that helps local producers, which improves their economic condition by promoting a path that values biodiversity and sustainability. The first macro-activity aims to support local farmers with the purchase of equipment and seeds to diversify production. The second macro-activity consists in training farmers for a better use of the territory and making them aware of a sustainable agricultural model. Around 1,000 people, mostly women, will benefit from this project.
