Venezuela has been facing a strong economic crisis for some years, aggravated by the most recent political crisis. Almost half of the population, in 2018, lived in poverty and we are witnessing the collapse of the system, which is no longer able to guarantee primary services. Inflation is reaching very high rates, unemployment is increasing and crime rates are reaching very alarming levels. In this context, many young Venezuelans do not attend school, on the one hand due to a lack of economic resources, and on the other because the institutions are unable to guarantee basic services such as transport and the supply of water to population centers and schools.

Project description

The project is developed in Ciudad Ojeda, located on the eastern coast of Lake Maracaibo, in the north-west of the country. Here, in 1954, the Augustinian fathers founded a school, which is now well underway.  Even in the city of Ojeda, where the fathers are present, the water network has been faulty for years and water is supplied irregularly and insufficiently thanks to tanker trucks, or through an old well that does not provide drinking water. The San Agustín Institute cannot therefore guarantee adequate hygienic conditions and sufficient drinking water.

With this project, a well and a water network will be created capable of bringing drinking water to the school for human consumption and personal hygiene, to maintain the school’s green spaces (necessary for pupils’ moments of recreation) and also provide water also to the rest of the communities and parish structures, improving the living conditions of almost 1300 pupils and a large number of residents.

Update: June 2020

The infrastructural intervention program for the various Augustinian realities in Venezuela continues. Thanks to their schools and welfare centers, the friars are helping thousands of people who are currently experiencing one of the worst economic and social crises in the country.

After reactivating the water supply system of the San Agustín College in Ciudad Ojeda, we installed a power generator for the Augustinian center in the City of Maracaibo. Thanks to the new generator we are assisting more than 300 people by guaranteeing a soup kitchen service, socio-health assistance and the supply of basic necessities.
