The Augustinians have been present in Algeria practically since their birth, since Saint Augustine was born in Tagaste in 354 AD. During the terrible years of terrorism in the 1990s, the friars decided not to abandon the country, even with the danger of being killed, and they kept alive their presence thanks to a program of intercultural dialogue promoted within the Basilica of Hippo, (present-day Annaba), where Augustine was bishop from 395 to 430 AD. Today, beyond the constant search for dialogue with their counterparts of the Muslim religion, they have been able to initiate small social programs that benefit above all, youth, the elderly and migrants.
