Living with COVID-19: adapting school procedures and services to the new needs of the pandemic

Management of the school crisis during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in the Province of San Juan de Sahagùn.

With this project it was possible to adapt and update the hygiene levels guaranteed by the Augustinian schools in Venezuela allowing the resumption of educational activities.

For the Augustinians it is a priority to comply with legal requirements, but above all to guarantee their students and their families the safest conditions. Everyone needs to feel safe and protected at school, to reduce the educational gap that has affected young people due to the interruption of school activities.
During the months of the pandemic, many families faced financial difficulties and were unable to afford the cost of education for their children.

The Augustinians intend to guarantee education for all, especially the most vulnerable in Venezuela, for this reason the school must be equipped with all the necessary equipment.
At the same time, it is not just about improving measures and containing a problem, but also observing reality and seeing other problems affecting the population: this is the case of the low participation rate in pre-primary education. The education of children aged 3 to 5 is essential to lay a solid foundation for development and growth. In Venezuela, enrollment was already declining before COVID-19 and was worsening in the following months.

The project focused on 2 main results: one dedicated to the prevention of contagion and the other to the mitigation of one of its effects.

The schools have been made safe and have become a safe environment for students and staff: in each school there is a sanitization machine and more disinfection products; the spaces for the nursery school have been renovated; many internal awareness campaigns (with signs and banners) were carried out without forgetting staff training.
Furthermore, the primary education program was offered to families who needed and were unable to work during the lockdown.
