Kisumu is the third largest city of Kenya, after Nairobi and Mombasa. It is experiencing a rapid economic growth thanks above all to foreign investment, attracted by innumerable economic opportunities and its strategic position. The city in fact has the third largest international airport in the country and it overlooks Lake Victoria and it is an area to “exploit”. The investments, however, have brought little benefit to the local population, which has increased in a dizzying manner. Kisumu has been transformed from a tranquil city, centered on fishing and agriculture into a metropolis surrounded by unsafe and unlivable shantytowns.
Description
The first phase of the project has planned for the construction of a multi-purpose center and the acquisition of some equipment in order to begin with social and educational activities. The most important aspect, in fact, is the program that can be studied and applied and has involved diverse association of the area. There are opportunities for intercultural dialogue, courses in information programming, agricultural training and a program of social assistance. The center has been transformed into a place of analysis and discussion and has become an important point of reference for the population. Much attention is focused on women because of the discrimination which they are constrained to live under, above all in rural communities. The program offers as a primary activity the basic scholastic training, courses in work training and technical and economic support for the opening of small productive businesses. Thanks to this plan of action, it is the hope that women are helped to find a more important role in the decision-making process in their villages.
