Ecological Briquettes “Makala”

Dungu: ATM Foundation Promotes Use of Ecological “Makala” Briquettes to Combat Deforestation

In Dungu, Democratic Republic of Congo, the Augustin à Travers le Monde Foundation (ATM, an offshoot of the Augustinians in the World Foundation) is leading an innovative and sustainable project for the production of ecological charcoal briquettes, called “Makala” in Lingala. The initiative, hosted at the Juvenat Center, aims to provide an ecological alternative to traditional charcoal, whose intensive production contributes to the serious problem of deforestation in the region.

An Eco-Friendly Alternative to Traditional Coal

“Makala” briquettes are made from household and rural waste, transforming waste materials into a valuable resource. This process not only reduces the environmental impact of waste management, but also offers a sustainable solution to the energy needs of local families.

Unlike traditional coal, which often requires the use of kerosene (a dangerous and polluting fuel), “Makala” briquettes burn cleanly and safely, reducing the risk of burns and house fires.

Training and Local Production

To spread this sustainable technology, the ATM Foundation organized free training courses, inviting local people to participate. Dr. Glodi Neema, the project trainer, guided participants through the theoretical and practical stages of briquette production.

“The goal is to provide people with the skills needed to produce and use these eco-friendly briquettes,” explained Ms. Neema. “This way, we can reduce dependence on traditional charcoal and protect our precious forests.”

A Positive Impact on the Environment and the Local Economy

The ATM Foundation initiative not only contributes to the protection of the environment, but also has a positive impact on the local economy. The production and sale of “Makala” briquettes create new job and income opportunities for the community, promoting sustainable and inclusive development.

An Invitation to Participation

The ATM Foundation invites all members of the community to participate in this important initiative. “Join us to learn how to produce eco-briquettes and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for Dungu”, is the appeal launched by the Foundation.

The “Makala” briquettes project is a concrete example of how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. The ATM Foundation is demonstrating that it is possible to find creative solutions to address environmental challenges and promote the economic development of local communities.
