The destruction of cyclones and support for the Augustinian missionaries

MozambiqueJanuary 2025. These are the images that come to us from the Augustinian Sisters “Hermanas Agustinas Hijas del Santísimo Salvador en Mozambique”.

Cyclones Chido and then Dikeledi left a trail of destruction with thousands of people forced to flee.

Torrential rains and powerful winds have devastated communities in the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula. The storm destroyed everything, forced thousands of people to abandon their homes and severely damaged roads and communications networks, hampering relief efforts in areas already hosting large numbers of displaced people. The tropical cyclone devastated 2,903 homes and damaged 6,089. It also destroyed 3 health units, 73 classrooms in 35 schools, affecting 2,562 pupils and 40 teachers. Other damage caused by Dikeledi included the toppling of 82 electricity pylons and the flooding of 127 hectares of farmland.

The Augustinian Sisters work in the north of the country with displaced people. Every day they assist thousands of refugees due to cyclones and Islamic terrorist attacks. People, especially women and children, flee their homes without food, blankets and a place to stay.

With our projects we support the work of the Sisters in Mozambique: we decided to rebuild 4 houses and organize a distribution of food and first aid kits.

It is difficult to establish a real number of beneficiaries. However, we can say that most of them are women with children.

*UPDATE*February 2025

The first aid has arrived: we have purchased food and seeds for initial food assistance.

Being present in rural and therefore more isolated areas is difficult, as international organizations are more present in the city.

But we don’t stop here: thanks also to your donations we will rebuild houses and continue to support the work of our missionaries.

In the meantime, training work for better use of the territory and raising awareness of a sustainable agricultural model also resumes.
