Playground – India
Edacochin, Kerala
Aim of the project: to create the conditions to facilitate interreligious dialogue
Kochi (formerly also known as Cochin) is one of the largest and most populous metropolitan areas in Kerala. The most important religions in the city are Hinduism, Christianity (35%) and Islam. The presence of so many religions and dialects is the consequence of waves of migration over the centuries.
Being a very populated area, there are no public spaces such as parks or playgrounds, and it is only thanks to the arrival of the Augustinians in this area that the inhabitants have their own church. Among their needs was also having a playground that could help people stay together and play, especially for teenagers and children.
The objective of the project is to improve and facilitate interreligious dialogue, through the construction of a sports center with a playground for the young people of the community. Creating an opportunity to share spaces is part of our social work: a space where children and youth can meet and play regardless of caste and creed.
Our aim is to provide young people and children with the opportunity to practice sports, to actively spend their free time, to develop the quality of their sporting spirit through socialisation, without the limits caused by the lack of conditions or adequate equipment.
The Augustinians above all provide spiritual support and with the creation of the playground they are ready to form a collaboration with schools and local institutions: thanks to these activities the schools are able to have a wider impact on the community (not only on the families of the students) and can also provide young people with a solid opportunity to be together creating culture and showing respect, care and commitment for the poorest.
