A sports camp to support inclusive education in Edacochin, Kerala

The Augustinian friars built a sports field to start a program aimed at young people, boys and girls.

The project will be developed in a village called Edacochin in Cochin City itself. Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a major port city on the Malabar Coast of India bordering the Laccadive Sea, which is a part of the Arabian Sea. It is part of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala and is commonly referred to as Ernakulam. Kochi is the most densely populated city in Kerala. As of 2011, it has a corporation limit population of 677,381 within an area of 94.88 km2 and a total urban population of more than of 2.1 million within an area of 440 km2, making it the largest and the most populous metropolitan area in Kerala. Kochi city is also part of the Greater Cochin region and is classified as a Tier-II city by the Government of India.

The area is very populated and most of the people are daily laborers. Since it is very populated area, there are no public spaces like parks or playgrounds. People only have a church of their own after the arrival of Augustinians in this area. It is also a necessity to have a playground that can help to stay together and play especially for the youth and the children. We also see it as part of our social work, because creating an opportunity of playground will help the children and youth to maintain good health of body and mind. In this present modern world, children are actually not interested in physical exercise and sports because of the influence of the technology and as well as lack of public spaces where they can come together and play. If this opportunity of preparing a playground is actualized, there will be many children and youth who can come and play in this place. It will help their mental health as well as for the socialization with the other children.

The St. Augustine Minor Seminary is having 1.5 acre land and 0.5 acre land is utilized for the building and almost 1 acre land is kept aside for the playground. Because of this situation we can’t use it for sports purpose.

The main objectives of the project is to create a space where children and youth can come together and play irrespective of caste and creed. We aim to provide youngsters and children the opportunity to practice sport and to pass leisure time actively and to develop and grow the quality of sportsmanship and they may socialize with each other, but they are limited due to the lack of conditions in the area and the lack of adequate equipment.
