The Order of Saint Augustine arrived in Peru in 1547 with its first representative, P. R. Augustine of the Holy Trinity, who had the mission of preparing the way for the arrival of his missionary brothers, but death overtook him before this could happen.
At the end of May 1551, 12 Augustinian friars arrived in Peru and were welcomed by the people as saints, immediately offering their help to encourage them.
In 1896, with an agreement between the Government of Peru and the Holy See, three Apostolic Prefectures were created, entrusted to three religious orders present in Peru since the 16th century, then in the process of being restored: Saint Augustine, Saint Francis and Saint Domingo. The Augustinians were assigned the northern part between the Marañón and Amazon rivers and their tributaries (with the exception of the Ucayali historically evangelized by the Franciscans), and on the borders with Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil, in an area of over 400,000 km2, based in Iquitos, capital of the Loreto department.
Today it is possible to find Augustinians in the province of Peru in Lima, in the vicariate in Iquitos, Apurimac and Chulucanas.
